A finely crafted functional piece of pottery brings a bit of art to your everyday life. In a fast paced, mass produced world, slow down and take the time to appreciate the details: the way a mug handle fits your hand just right, the curve of the lip that feels perfect to sip from.
Make no mistake, none of this happens by accident. Robin takes great care in crafting each piece of pottery.
Robin Kirby has studied clay at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Haywood Community College in the Professional Crafts Department. Born in Chapel Hill NC, she has been working in her home studio in Saluda, NC since 2005.
She is a proud member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild since 2010. Robin enjoys making functional pottery for home use with a creative and decorative interpretation.
In addition to her studio work, Robin also has a passion for teaching, and has been teaching adult pottery classes at Blue Ridge Community College through the Continuing Education Department since 2012.
My current work is a reflection of my love of nature and appreciation of the genius creativity of the Cultures who have come before us. I also find inspiration from the process of making. Each new body of work is influenced by the one that came before it.
I intend each piece to be functional in your life and take great care to ensure every detail is thought through while maintaining my artistic vision, from the size of a handle to the curve of the lip on a mug.
I am using a stoneware clay, produced here in the Mountains of North Carolina. The original designs are hand-carved and painted on each piece. No two are alike, though they will share the feeling of belonging together.
Robin’s functional pottery is all safe for the microwave, dishwasher and oven. As with all pottery, bake-ware should be placed in a cold oven and then brought to temperature to avoid thermal shock.
